A new study shows that men who take sildenafil (Viagra) or other erectile dysfunction medications may suffer more side effects than healthy, older people. In one of the first studies, the researchers examined the effects of the drugs on the body's natural ageing process.
The researchers looked at more than 12,000 people aged 50 and older to see how the drugs affected their natural ageing process. They found that those taking sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (the most common erectile dysfunction in the U. S.) and taking the drugs for erectile dysfunction (such as Viagra) had a 20% lower risk of death in the future than the healthy and older participants.
The drug sildenafil and other drugs that treat erectile dysfunction and improve blood flow to the penis may cause fewer side effects than drugs like Viagra. But the drugs may also have an effect on the brain. "We don't know for sure whether the effects of these drugs are greater than the effects of some of the other drugs that might be used to treat this disease," said Dr. Steven Nissen, the study's lead author.
The drugs may also have an effect on the heart. Researchers found that those taking sildenafil for erectile dysfunction and other drugs that treat cardiovascular diseases (such as angina) had a 30% lower risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death compared to people who did not take the drugs.
Other studies have shown that sildenafil can reduce the effect of nitroglycerin. Nitrates are found in some prescription drugs and can also cause blood pressure to increase. This is called a "blood pressure drop" and can happen when your heart is not pumping enough blood.
Dr. Nissen said people who take the drugs for erectile dysfunction may not be able to have sexual activity because they are too embarrassed to have sex. "These drugs are very similar drugs and have very similar side effects," he said.
The study was the first to look at these drugs that could have an effect on the body's natural ageing process. "The studies we did, which were a relatively short study, were all very interesting because they all looked at a very large population," Nissen said.
A study of the blood vessels of the penis has also found that drugs like verapamil (Veracaftor) and sildenafil (Viagra) can affect the blood vessels in the lungs.
